Summary

The history of the Targaryens comes to life in this Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon

Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen--the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria--took up residence on Dragonstone。 Fire & Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart。

What really happened during the Dance of the Dragons? Why was it so deadly to visit Valyria after the Doom? What were Maegor the Cruel's worst crimes? What was it like in Westeros when dragons ruled the skies? These are but a few of the questions answered in this essential chronicle, as related by a learned maester of the Citadel。 Readers have glimpsed small parts of this narrative in such volumes as The World of Ice & Fire, but now, for the first time, the full tapestry of Targaryen history is revealed。

With all the scope and grandeur of Gibbon's The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Fire & Blood is the first volume of the definitive two-part history of the Targaryens, giving readers a whole new appreciation for the dynamic, often bloody, and always fascinating history of Westeros。

the only reason I finished this from end to end was so that I could argue with people online about house of the dragon。 objectively, this is the most boringly written piece of material I have ever read。 GRRM has the ability to be an amazing storyteller, but he somehow manages to suck the life out of the Targaryen dynasty, which should have been vibrant and exciting。 the history-textbook style of writing is nothing but detrimental - you lose any sense of connection to the characters and the world the only reason I finished this from end to end was so that I could argue with people online about house of the dragon。 objectively, this is the most boringly written piece of material I have ever read。 GRRM has the ability to be an amazing storyteller, but he somehow manages to suck the life out of the Targaryen dynasty, which should have been vibrant and exciting。 the history-textbook style of writing is nothing but detrimental - you lose any sense of connection to the characters and the world。 you read about Alysanne Targaryen watching all her children die one after the other, and you barely even care because it's told so clinically that it barely even matters。 you only care tangentially about the Dance of the Dragons because you're picturing Emma D'Arcy as Rhaenyra。 I am suddenly imbued with a new level of respect for the HotD show runners for pulling something watchable out of this utterly dry piece of literature。ultimately, even the intrigue of the multiple historical accounts cannot make this book interesting in the slightest。 frankly, I would recommend reading the wikipedia pages if you're looking for HotD spoilers, because approximately nothing in this thousand-page slog is remotely worth it。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book。 I thought the false history style was really entertaining, and the conflicting accounts of the different sources really gave a sense of facts being lost over time which added to the awesome worldbuilding that Martin has done with this book。Whilst not as gripping as the A Song of Ice and Fire series, this book is perhaps easier to get into because of the narritive style。 Despite that, I'd still definitely recommend reading ASoIaF first。I don't know if I would have been I really enjoyed this book。 I thought the false history style was really entertaining, and the conflicting accounts of the different sources really gave a sense of facts being lost over time which added to the awesome worldbuilding that Martin has done with this book。Whilst not as gripping as the A Song of Ice and Fire series, this book is perhaps easier to get into because of the narritive style。 Despite that, I'd still definitely recommend reading ASoIaF first。I don't know if I would have been as hooked if it wasn't for getting to know some of the characters from the House of the Dragon television show as time passed so quickly and so many characters were introduced in the 133 years that this book spans。 Having watched the first half of Season 1 of this show though I was even more engrossed in what happened to the characters。 。。。more

Such a strange book。 I read it because I enjoyed the Game of Thrones。 But, this was not at that level or even that style。 More of a dry historical reference to what came before, if I cared to know, which I didn't。 I was hoping for more great characters and adventures, but none of the characters evolved very far。 And I tired of keeping track of the endless characters, which ran into the 100s and all had interesting names, but scant personality。 There was little of what I enjoyed from Game of Thro Such a strange book。 I read it because I enjoyed the Game of Thrones。 But, this was not at that level or even that style。 More of a dry historical reference to what came before, if I cared to know, which I didn't。 I was hoping for more great characters and adventures, but none of the characters evolved very far。 And I tired of keeping track of the endless characters, which ran into the 100s and all had interesting names, but scant personality。 There was little of what I enjoyed from Game of Thrones of which to sink my teeth into。 I should have paid more attention to the subtitle - A Targaryen History。 That it was。 。。。more

Written more like a historical textbook than an actual novel, it can often feel like you're doing homework rather than reading a fantasy novel。 Fortunately, the political intrigue and worldbuilding is genuinely engrossing and constantly engaging。 Written more like a historical textbook than an actual novel, it can often feel like you're doing homework rather than reading a fantasy novel。 Fortunately, the political intrigue and worldbuilding is genuinely engrossing and constantly engaging。 。。。more

4 Stars!I loved diving back into George R。R。 Martin's epic story。 Fire and Blood covers about 150 years of history and is told from the memoirs of three individuals。 I only give 4 Stars as I wished Fire and Blood would have been written with more details。 I felt Martin could have had three separate novels and gone a bit deeper with this material。 Though I'm happy as we finally have a new book published after a long wait。 An enjoyable read and great insight to the Targaryen's and dragons。 4 Stars!I loved diving back into George R。R。 Martin's epic story。 Fire and Blood covers about 150 years of history and is told from the memoirs of three individuals。 I only give 4 Stars as I wished Fire and Blood would have been written with more details。 I felt Martin could have had three separate novels and gone a bit deeper with this material。 Though I'm happy as we finally have a new book published after a long wait。 An enjoyable read and great insight to the Targaryen's and dragons。 。。。more

The long history of the TargaryensI love history。 And I love the Game of Thrones series, all 7 seasons of it。 While it’s been years later, I’m still mending my utter disappointment for season 8, which I heard could’ve been stretched for 6 seasons until season 13。 So when the series House of Dragon came out, I hesitated。 But then a certain self-proclaimed Game of Thrones walking dictionary (he has read every GoT books) suggested me to read this book instead。And in a way it’s perfect, as I underst The long history of the TargaryensI love history。 And I love the Game of Thrones series, all 7 seasons of it。 While it’s been years later, I’m still mending my utter disappointment for season 8, which I heard could’ve been stretched for 6 seasons until season 13。 So when the series House of Dragon came out, I hesitated。 But then a certain self-proclaimed Game of Thrones walking dictionary (he has read every GoT books) suggested me to read this book instead。And in a way it’s perfect, as I understand the world of GoT well enough having watched the series twice in a row。 And reading this book is like reading a history book over a familiar current affairs issues, which is what I’m used to。Not going to spoil anything from the book, but in a nutshell, let me just say it’s so astonishing that a book can have an unbelievable scale of imagination with all the richness of the backgrounds and legends about the Targaryen Dynasty, considering that this is a work of fiction。 All of the human greed, emotions, injustice, political in-fightings, conspiracies, sibling rivalries, the barbarity of peasants, even plagues, are all felt so real, not unlike the real events occurring in world history。I’ve never read fiction in this kind of porpotion before, and never read any of George RR Martin’s book before。 Now I understands my friends’ obsession with the books。 Very well done。 。。。more

I absolutely tore through this and now have a much more thorough knowledge of Westeros's history than I do of Britain's, and I am fine with that。 My only criticism is that there isn't a map at the front, what the hell, George!?

The first few chapters were good and sound exciting but the latter chapters bore me as there were too many characters to remember or recall。

È il primo libro che leggo di Martin。 Geniale l’idea di farne un trattato storico con il conseguente problema della veridicità delle fonti。 La parte relativa alla Danza dei Draghi veramente appassionante!

I am sad the have missed the illustrations, and guess I will just have to buy a physical copy one day for my collection and to look at what the illustrations are。ANYWAYS, this is a history book。 So be prepared for that。 And it's set up realistically as well! (And as much as Mushroom's accounts often get disregarded as unlikely, I'm prone to believe his to be the most accurate)。 The Targaryens are insane and I love them。 I will die on this hill。Though, Alicent, honey。 If you don't want a whore to sit on the throne nor a prince of fleebottom, maybe your son Aegon isn't the best choice。 Can't wait for part 2 and for the few remaining episodes! 。。。more

Abandoned all real life obligations just because I didn’t want to stop reading this。 I want to spend an hour in GRRM’s head just to see what goes on in there。 The fact that he created a whole history of a dynasty - and writes it basically like a fun little soap opera - blows my mind。 Cool book and now I just ruined the “House of Dragons” for myself :-D

Interesting insight into the history of Westeros。 Recommend to GoT fans, not so much to new readers。 A bit hard to read and it took my a while due to the writing style, but still interesting and engaging。

Finally! It seemed like it took forever to get through this book, and I am certainly left with mixed feelings。 on the positive side, the history of the Targaryens and Westeros in general is oddly fascinating (given it is completely fictional) and learning of the twists and turns, betrayals and beheadings of the minions of the Seven Kingdoms is interesting in how it sometimes parallels our own world history。 However, "Fire & Blood" is not written in the same style as "A Song of Ice and Fire" where Finally! It seemed like it took forever to get through this book, and I am certainly left with mixed feelings。 on the positive side, the history of the Targaryens and Westeros in general is oddly fascinating (given it is completely fictional) and learning of the twists and turns, betrayals and beheadings of the minions of the Seven Kingdoms is interesting in how it sometimes parallels our own world history。 However, "Fire & Blood" is not written in the same style as "A Song of Ice and Fire" where each chapter is told by a particular character and the narrative winds its way to a conclusion where most of these perspectives gel together into a satisfying climax。 Instead, "Fire & Blood" reads like a history book written by the maesters of the time who record what they see and speculate on the rest。 As such, it drags at points, and becomes repetitive as Martin (the author) begins to separate the slightly different perspectives of the differing opinions of the growing number of amateur historians (including, at times, the King's Fool, the dwarf Mushroom)。 There are also so many characters that it is very easy to lose track of who is who, and Martin takes joy in sometimes writing off a handful of characters in a single paragraph (ie, and during the last month of the year, the kingdom lost Ser Soandso, Lady Whatshername and Lord Iforgotabouthim) It can be confusing and detracts from the story。 。。。more

Great storytelling…。 Albeit a bit lengthy and at times rather repetitive

I always marvel at these fantasy guys who create entire histories in their brains and Martin is clearly one of the best。 The death by names towards the end got only a bit exhausting but reading the juicy bits of the Targaryen history was really fun and I was ready for more after 700 pages。 If the next Thrones book is too much to ask for I’d definitely be happy with another one of these。 MVP Mushroom。

It was great! I love history and historical fiction as well as A Song of Ice and Fire, so I knew I needed to read this。 It's also great to get more information on the characters from House of the Dragon。 I can't wait to see where the show goes with this material, and I can't wait to read the rest of the Targaryan dynasty's stories。 It was great! It’s a history book about Westeros under the Targaryens。 It might not be for everyone because of how it’s written but it is very well written。 The book becomes a lot funnier about half way through。

This was a pretty good story with lots of action。 Probably would have given this 5 stars if not for the kind of lame ending。 650 pages are intriguing, and the final 100 pages are just dull and of little substance to the overall plot。

As a history major, I LOVED how the history was told of the Targaryens。 The various tellings of the same events brought me back to Sophomore year and my historiography course。

really entertaining book from GRRM。 reads a bit like a textbook, but the fictional authorship shines through。 very interesting contrast of unreliable narrators in Grand Maester Munkun and Mushroom the dwarf - especially when they contrast each other and having House of the Dragon to set what "actually" happened, but I like that there is some ambiguity to the actual historical details。 Very worth reading for any fans of A Song of Ice and Fire。 I may be a summer child but here's hoping Winds of Wi really entertaining book from GRRM。 reads a bit like a textbook, but the fictional authorship shines through。 very interesting contrast of unreliable narrators in Grand Maester Munkun and Mushroom the dwarf - especially when they contrast each other and having House of the Dragon to set what "actually" happened, but I like that there is some ambiguity to the actual historical details。 Very worth reading for any fans of A Song of Ice and Fire。 I may be a summer child but here's hoping Winds of Winter comes out soon。。。 。。。more
